My 13-Year-Old Daughter Spent Three Weeks at Her Dream Summer Camp—Then the Director Told Me She Wasn’t Welcome Back

For three years, my daughter Mia talked about one place more than anywhere else in the world.

A summer camp.

She knew everything about it.

She had studied the website so many times that she could recognize the cabins from a single photograph. She watched videos of children riding horses through the woods, swimming in the lake, sitting around campfires, and making friendships that seemed to last forever.

Every summer, she asked me the same question.

“Can I go this year?”

And every summer, I gave her the same answer.

“Maybe next year.”

It wasn’t because I didn’t want her to go.

I wanted it desperately.

The problem was money.

The camp wasn’t cheap, and I was a single parent trying to keep up with the mortgage, groceries, bills, and everything else that comes with raising a child.

But when Mia turned thirteen, I realized something.

There might never be a perfect financial moment.

So I decided to make it happen.
