The Wedding I Wasn’t Invited To
Part One: The Discovery
“You can’t come, Mariana. My mother isn’t well, and I’d rather not complicate things.”
That was how Javier left their apartment one Thursday morning, explaining that he had to join his family in San Miguel.
Naturally, Mariana offered to go with him.
“I can take a day off work and come along.”
But Javier refused.
“The house will be full of relatives. It’s better if you stay here.”
His answer hurt her. For six years, she had done her utmost to be accepted by her in-laws, despite the tensions that had existed since the beginning of their marriage.
After he left, she happened to find a document left in his jacket pocket: a quote for a large wedding reception, along with a note stating that the balance had to be paid before the wedding of Paola—Javier’s sister.
Surprised, Mariana immediately called her husband.
“How is your mother?”
“She’s resting.”
“Can I speak to her?”
There was a silence.
“That’s not possible right now.”
The call ended abruptly.
Later that evening, some social media posts caught her eye. They showed a magnificent hacienda decorated for a ceremony. Watching a live stream, Mariana realized that Javier was attending his sister’s wedding.
She also caught a glimpse of her mother-in-law looking perfectly healthy.
In that moment, she realized that her exclusion hadn’t been due to a family emergency.
This discovery led her to reflect on the many years she had spent putting others’ needs before her own.
The next morning, she checked their joint bank account. She saw that her personal savings were still there, but that several expenses related to the wedding arrangements had been paid from the account.
After much thought, she made a major decision.
