Grandfather stopped eating when he realized I was paying my parents’ rent while my sister was living there for free with her two children. Dad had said she needed more help—as if my life mattered less. A heavy silence fell over the table as Grandfather set down his fork and finally spoke the words no one was expecting.
Grandfather froze mid-bite.
“Wait… you pay your parents’ rent?”
I sat motionless, my fork halfway to my mouth. Across the table, my mother’s face tightened. My sister, Claire, looked down at her plate as if the mashed potatoes had suddenly become the most interesting thing in the room.
