A stranger beside me on a flight asked, “Could you pretend you fell asleep on my shoulder?” I almost said no. I had just left Chicago with my five-year-old daughter, two suitcases, and a marriage that had fallen apart three days earlier. But I agreed. Two hours later, I woke up still leaning against him—and discovered the quiet man beside me was one of the country’s best-known billionaires. Then my phone reconnected, and a message from my ex-husband appeared: I KNOW YOU TOOK FIONA TO NEW YORK.

No dramatic ruling that destroyed David.

The judge did not declare me right and him evil.

Instead, the court set a prompt hearing, ordered both of us not to remove Fiona from the country, and directed that neither parent interfere with the other’s reasonable communication with her while the case was pending.

Miriam arranged a short video call between Fiona and David.

I stayed off camera.

“Daddy!” Fiona said.

David smiled so brightly that, for one second, I almost doubted myself.

“Hey, baby. Daddy misses you.”

“I saw a boat.”

“Did you?”

“And Mr. Buttons was on an airplane.”

“That sounds exciting.”

Then his eyes shifted.

He knew I was nearby.

“Is Mommy there?”

Miriam had told me not to insert myself unless necessary.

Fiona nodded.

David’s jaw tightened.

“Tell Mommy Daddy needs to talk to her.”

Fiona looked toward me.

I stepped into view.

“Hi, David.”

His expression changed immediately.
