An Entitled Woman Took the Lounge Chairs My Daughter and I Had Reserved—Twenty Minutes Later, the Entire

We found two chairs near the back of the pool deck.

They were not beneath an umbrella, but I moved one into the narrow shadow cast by a palm tree and asked a nearby family whether they minded sharing part of their shade.

“Of course not,” the father said immediately.

His wife helped me reposition the chair.

I thanked them and sat beside Mia.

For several minutes, she stared down at her smoothie without drinking it.

“Are you all right?” I asked.

She nodded, but her mouth trembled.

“Mia?”

She leaned closer.

“Did that lady want us to leave because I don’t have hair?”

My heart cracked.

“No, sweetheart.”

“But she looked at my head.”

I knelt in front of her.

“That woman wanted the chairs, and instead of admitting she did something wrong, she decided to be cruel. What she said was about the kind of person she chose to be. It had nothing to do with you.”

“Do I make people uncomfortable?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

I held her face gently between my hands.

“You make people see courage. Sometimes courage reminds people that life is not always easy, and not everyone knows how to handle that. But you never need to apologize for what you survived.”

She looked toward the stolen chairs.

“I don’t feel brave.”

“Brave people don’t always feel brave.”

Mia was quiet for a moment.

Then she took a sip of her smoothie.

“I still want to swim.”

“Then that is exactly what we’re going to do.”

I was helping her apply more sunscreen when a resort employee walked past.

He wore navy trousers and a pale-blue polo shirt with the resort logo. His name tag read Daniel—Guest Services.

He looked at me.

Then he glanced toward the woman occupying our chairs.

To my surprise, he winked.

Before I could understand what he meant, he continued walking.

A few minutes later, Daniel returned carrying a small blue gift box tied with a silver ribbon.

He approached the woman.

“Excuse me, ma’am,” he said brightly.

She looked up.

“Congratulations. You are our five-hundredth guest check-in this week, and the resort has prepared a special prize for you.”

The change in her expression was immediate.

She sat straighter and smoothed her hair.

“Oh,” she said, smiling broadly. “How wonderful.”

Her boyfriend finally put down his phone.

People sitting nearby turned to watch.

The woman glanced around, clearly enjoying the attention. She accepted the blue box with both hands and held it up as though she were posing for a photograph.

“What is it?” she asked.

“You’ll have to open it,” Daniel replied.

She eagerly pulled away the ribbon.

Then she lifted the lid.

The scream that followed silenced the entire pool deck.
