He found me at the kitchen table, the box open beside me, the newspaper clipping and the investigator’s letter both in my hands.
I watched something in his face give way — not anger, not the panic I’d braced for. Just an old, exhausted grief finally being allowed to surface after almost two decades of holding it under.
“Sit down,” I said. “Tell me the truth. All of it.”
So he did.
Her name was Rachel, he told me. His first wife. They’d married young, had Emily a year later, and for a while, life had been ordinary in the best possible way. But Rachel had an ex from before Daniel — a man named Curtis, unstable and controlling, who hadn’t accepted that she’d moved on. There were threats. A restraining order that did almost nothing. Rachel never told her new husband how bad it had really gotten, because she didn’t want him doing something reckless to protect her.
Then came March 14th, almost eighteen years ago. Daniel woke to smoke and Rachel’s screaming. He got Emily halfway down the hallway before the ceiling came down between them. Neighbors pulled him out of the house, burned and half-conscious, fighting to go back in. By the time firefighters gained control of the blaze, he told me, there was nothing left to save.
