So I listened.
Phedra asked for her phone. She wanted to call me. My mother entered the yard wearing a gold hummingbird necklace.
I recognized it immediately.
I had given that necklace to Phedra on our fifth wedding anniversary.
“He has a right to know I’m sick,” Phedra said.
“You are not worrying my son with your drama,” Selina replied. “Damian is working to build a future. He doesn’t need to spend twelve hours in a factory and then listen to you complain.”
“The doctor said I need to continue treatment.”
“Doctors always say that. They’re paid to.”
“I can’t stop again.”
Selina crossed her arms.
“My son sends his money to my account. I decide how that money is used.”
Phedra slowly raised her eyes toward the new SUV parked beside the house.
“You bought that.”
Selina said nothing.
“And Godfrey opened his shop.”
“Your point?”
“You remodeled the kitchen. You bought the television. You bought furniture. You took my necklace.”
