I CAME HOME FROM CANADA WITHOUT WARNING AND FOUND MY WIFE BALD, STARVING AND EATING SCRAPS IN THE BACKYARD—THEN I MENTIONED MY $1 MILLION SETTLEMENT AND WATCHED MY FAMILY EXPOSE EVERYTHING THEY’D STOLEN

“Oh, Damian.”

My mother touched my arm.

“You should have told us.”

“I just found out.”

“And poor Phedra,” she said, turning toward my wife. “This changes everything. We can get her proper treatment.”

Phedra looked at me.

I felt her fingers tighten around mine.

She understood before they did.

I was lying.

Not about the settlement.

The settlement was real.

The lie was that any part of it was available to them.

“I need to straighten out my financial records before the final funds are released,” I said. “My lawyer wants a complete accounting of everything I’ve financed back home.”

Godfrey became cautious.

“What does that mean?”

“The house. SUV. Your shop. Everything purchased with money I sent.”

Selina answered quickly.

“That’s easy.”

“Good. I’ll need receipts, deeds, titles, loan documents, bank statements. Anything showing where my transfers went.”

Godfrey looked at her.

“Why would they need all that?”
