I flew home to tell my daughter off for wasting the money I’d been sending for five years. I found her at school eating half a bread roll — and then the counsellor told me she’d been registered as a low-income student since the year I left.

It is a line that stops any adult in that building from ever bringing it up with my daughter, and therefore from ever finding out that it was not true.

I did not make a scene in that office and I want to be honest about why, because it was not restraint.
