“Nora,” she said. “Let me make sure I understand. Your husband and his mistress are planning to remove you from the family and take the family assets. And they don’t know the family assets are entirely yours, held in your name, structured so tightly that Caleb has no ownership claim whatsoever — he’s an employee of your holding company, essentially, with a title and a salary and zero equity?”
“That’s correct.”
“They’re planning to evict the landlord from her own building.”
“They are.”
“Oh, this is going to be a good week.”
Second, I did nothing to tip them off. I smiled at Caleb over anniversary dinner. I let him think his plan was proceeding. I let Chloe keep believing she’d be the triumphant mother of the heir, installed in my house, and that I’d be gone “before I even realized what happened,” as Caleb had put it.
I let them keep planning their coronation.
