Panic set in. I practically threw the duvet off the bed and stripped the sheets, inspecting the seams of the mattress with my phone flashlight. Nothing. No dark spots, no cast skins, no tiny reddish-brown insects scuttling into the dark. I checked the headboard, the baseboards, and the edges of the rug. It was spotless.
