In this photo I smiled in the arms of my stepfather… For years, my mother believed that she loved me like her own daughter, but I did not know that, behind closed doors, those same hands subjected me to such cruel abuse that their consequences would accompany me throughout my life

Sometimes I counted every minute.

Mark had also taught me a rule:

What happens in this house stays in this house.

I once gathered enough courage to tell my mother:

Pregnancy and Maternity

“Mom, I don’t like to be alone with Mark.

She immediately sat next to me.

I still remember the worry on his face.

But just at that moment Mark came into the room.

He didn’t say anything.

He just looked at me.

And I changed what I was going to say.

“Because… he’s very strict with me with the schoolwork.

My mother laughs, relieved.

He just wants you to study well.

Mark smiled.

But as soon as my mother turned around, that smile disappeared from her face.

Pregnancy and Maternity

That night I realized that asking for help was going to be much harder than I had imagined.

But the real terror began a few months later, when my mother had to leave town for a whole weekend for work.

On Friday morning he hugged me, kissed me on the forehead and said,

Mark will take good care of you.

I didn’t answer.
