My ex-husband invited the former wife he believed was still childless and miserable to his family’s Christmas at their military estate. He never imagined I would arrive on a government tactical helicopter — with four eight-year-olds who had his face.

And now, on an ordinary Tuesday afternoon in November, that man wanted me at Christmas dinner.

There was no apology in that message. There was no explanation.

There was no how are you, and there was no question mark anywhere in it, and there was nothing at all about four children.

Four lines, written the way that man has written every instruction of his life.

Mother would like to see you one final time. Christmas Day. The Vail place, Fort Ellsworth. Make sure you’re there.

I read it twice. Then a third time, slowly.

And then I smiled, and I want to be honest about that smile, because I have had eleven weeks to look at it and it was not a good one.

Because Grayson Vail still had me filed as the frightened twenty-six-year-old standing on the steps of a military courthouse in a coat that did not fit.
