My husband had no idea I was the anonymous billionaire behind the company he was proudly celebrating that night. To him, I was just his “plain, exhausted” wife who had “lost herself” after giving birth to twins. At his promotion gala, I stood there holding our babies when he pushed me toward the exit.

Callum tried to speak again. I held up one hand, and he stopped, some instinct clearly recognizing exactly how little room remained for him to argue his way out of this particular room.

⸻

“Effective immediately,” I said, turning to the board, “I’m recommending Callum Hayes’s termination for cause, based on documented conduct unbecoming an executive of this company. I’ll abstain from the formal vote myself, given the obvious conflict of interest, but I wanted every person at this table to understand exactly what they’re voting on before they cast it.”

⸻

The vote passed unanimously six to zero, Callum sitting frozen in his chair through the entire fifteen-second process, watching five years of ambition collapse in less time than it had taken him to push a stroller out a back exit.

⸻

“Olivia,” he said, once the room had mostly cleared, “please. We can talk about this privately. This doesn’t have to be the company’s business.”
