Mason is holding his homemade volleyball poster upside down.
Nobody noticed until we printed the picture.
We decided to leave it that way.
The drive home was unusually quiet.
Mason fell asleep before we reached the edge of town.
Kaylee went with her teammates to a pizza celebration.
Travis drove with both hands on the steering wheel.
The red rose rested on the dashboard.
Neither of us spoke.
After putting Mason to bed, I found Travis sitting at the kitchen table.
The same table where he’d refused Kaylee’s request two nights earlier.
The rose lay in front of him.
I made coffee and sat across from him.
“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you Dad was coming,” I said. “I should have been honest with you.”
Travis shook his head.
“If you’d told me, I’d have agreed to walk her out because you wanted me to.”
