Written across the top were four words:
For Emily — when she’s ready.
I stood there for a long time before finally opening it.
Inside were dozens of letters.
All of them were written in Mark’s handwriting
.
I picked up the first one.
“If you’re reading this someday, it means your mother finally decided you should know the truth about me.”
Before I could read further, my phone rang.
It was Mark.
I answered.
He didn’t say hello.
“You’re in Unit 214, aren’t you?”
My heart sank.
“Who is Emily?”
There was silence.
“Mark, who is Emily?”
His voice was quiet.
“My daughter.”

I sat down on the floor.
“You have a daughter?”
“Yes.”
“And you never told me?”
“I wanted to explain.”
“You’ve had fourteen years to explain.”
“I know.”
“Then explain now.”
He took a long breath.
“She wasn’t a secret because I was living another life. She was my daughter from before we met. Her name is Emily.”
I looked at the photographs again.
“What happened?”
“My relationship with her mother ended when Emily was young. We had disagreements about custody and eventually lost oussama contact. I tried to stay involved. I went through legal channels and spent years trying to reconnect with them.”
“Did you abandon her?”
“No.”
His answer came immediately.
“No, Lena. I never wanted to leave her.”
“Then why keep this place hidden?”
His voice became unsteady.
“Because I couldn’t bring myself to throw her things away.”
I didn’t know what to say.
When Mark returned home that night, we sat across from each other in the living room.
I placed the storage key on the table between us.
“Tell me everything.”
He did.
Emily had been born before our relationship. Her mother, Claire, had eventually moved away. Mark had tried to maintain contact, but circumstances became increasingly difficult. Communication stopped, legal efforts went nowhere, and over time he lost contact with his daughter.

The storage unit became the place where he kept everything connected to her.
Photographs.
Cards.
Returned gifts.
Letters.
Small childhood belongings.
He had continued writing letters even though he didn’t know whether Emily would ever read them.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked.
Mark looked down.
“I was ashamed.”
“Of your daughter?”
“No. Of losing her.”
That answer didn’t erase what he had done.
I was still hurt.
He had kept something enormous from me for fourteen years. I felt as though I had been given only part of the story of our marriage.
But I also understood something I hadn’t understood when I first opened the unit.
Mark hadn’t created another family.

He had been holding onto the memory of one he had lost.
That didn’t excuse keeping the truth from me. But it helped me understand why the storage unit existed.
Still, one question remained.
“What about Emily?”
Mark looked frightened.
“I don’t know where she is.”
