The county did write to me. There is a letter.
And Elliot did not speak to me for eleven days.
He went back to Halvorsen four days early. He answered messages with one word and he did not answer the phone.
On the eleventh day he came home on a Thursday evening without telling me and sat down at the kitchen table and said he needed to say three things and that I was not to answer any of them until he had finished all three.
The first was that Kai had asked him to tell me he was not angry.
The second was that Elliot was.
And the third was this, and I wrote it down within the hour because I wanted it in his words and not mine.
He said: “I have spent my whole life being the person you were normal in front of. I didn’t know that’s what I was until nine days ago. And the first time something happened that you couldn’t be normal about, you locked the door before you said one word to me.”
