The Black Button in Hannah’s Hand Changed What I Came Home To

She carried a small camera and two file folders.

“You were right about the dates,” she said.

“About what?”

“They do not line up.”

I photographed the ledger page she placed on the table.

The transfer date was printed at the top. The hospital record beside it showed a different account reference, but four digits matched the ones I had written on my grocery receipt.

I leaned closer.

“That’s the same number.”

Caroline tapped the corner of the file folder twice before opening it.

“Look here.”

A second page showed the same partial account number.

“That came from Hannah’s file?”

“Yes.”

“Why would a hospital record have a vineyard account number?”

Caroline closed the folder.

“That is the question I hoped you would ask.”

She handed me the photograph.

“Did Hannah know about the transfer?”

“I do not know.”

“Did she know about the account?”

“I don’t know that either.”
