The Black Button in Hannah’s Hand Changed What I Came Home To

“Why did you keep this from me?”

“Because she told me not to give it to you until you came home.”

“I came home early.”

“I know.”

The spoon beside my cup rattled when someone at the next table moved a chair.

I kept looking at the signature.

“Did Hannah expect something to happen?”

Caroline folded the photocopy once, carefully.

“She expected someone might try to take control before you had the chance to ask questions.”

“Who?”

“I was not given that name.”

She reached into her folder and pulled out a second photocopy.

“This was attached to the instruction.”

It was a short list of property records, account records, and one line about the vineyard.

I read the line twice.

“Why would she include the vineyard?”

Caroline put the second page back.

“That is one question I cannot answer yet.”

The answer would have to wait.

I looked toward the hospital entrance.

“Did she mention my mother?”

“Not by name.”

“What did she say?”
