The Black Button in Hannah’s Hand Changed What I Came Home To

The authority became active upon documented evidence of interference with Hannah’s affairs.

I read that sentence twice.

“Hannah did not prepare this for a normal day.”

My voice sounded too loud in the study.

I rubbed the edge of my wedding ring again.

Six months before she passed away, Hannah had prepared for someone to interfere with her affairs.

I looked at her signature beside mine.

Then I reached for the visitor log.

The first page was still marked October 28.

I laid it beside the power of attorney.

The two dates did not belong together.

I reached for the phone.

Caroline had not yet gone home.

I dialed her number.

She answered on the second ring.

“Nathan?”

“I found the document.”

There was a short pause.

“Then bring it with you tomorrow.”

“Why?”

“Because I found another date.”

She did not say more.

“Which date?”

“The one Hannah wanted us to notice.”

I stood beside the green lamp with the power of attorney in my hand.

“Where?”

Caroline was quiet for one second.
