The Black Button in Hannah’s Hand Changed What I Came Home To

I leaned closer.

“That’s the same number.”

Caroline tapped the corner of the file folder twice before opening it.

“Look here.”

A second page showed the same partial account number.

“That came from Hannah’s file?”

“Yes.”

“Why would a hospital record have a vineyard account number?”

Caroline closed the folder.

“That is the question I hoped you would ask.”

She handed me the photograph.

“Did Hannah know about the transfer?”

“I do not know.”

“Did she know about the account?”

“I don’t know that either.”

Caroline studied my face for a second.

“Then we keep the question exactly where it is.”

I slipped the photograph into my wallet.

“What do you mean?”

“We do not give Lorraine a theory. We give her a date and ask for a document.”

I looked again at the crossed out account number.

“She will ask why I am looking.”

“Then tell her you are checking the inheritance paperwork.”

“That is not the whole truth.”

“No,” Caroline said. “It is not.”

We stood there with the folders between us.
