He turned his head toward the porch.
I lowered my voice.
“Caroline, what did Hannah put in that envelope?”
“I do not know everything.”
“You opened it?”
“No.”
“Then why are you afraid to tell me where it is?”
“Because Hannah told me to give it to you only after you came home.”
“I am home.”
“I know.”
Her voice changed.
“Nathan, do not let your mother put anything in your hands tonight.”
The paper in my hand had one corner bent under, and Caroline was already reaching for it when I stepped toward the door.
I stopped. She pointed to the chair beside her desk.
“Sit down, Nathan.”
I sat, but kept my coat on. The hospital office was quiet except for the old wall clock above her filing cabinet.
Caroline took a key from her pocket and fitted it into the cabinet lock.
“Before we look at anything else, I need you to see the visitor log.”
She pulled out a thin folder and laid it between us.
