The Empty Coffin

The voice on the other end gasped in absolute horror before the line abruptly went dead with a harsh click. Clara lowered the phone slowly, her gaze sweeping across the stunned faces of the corporate partners and employees who had tried to rush her son into the ground. She knew that protecting her boy meant fighting a powerful network of corrupt businessmen who thought they could bury the truth along with an anonymous body….

“You tried to fake his death,” Clara whispered, stepping toward Lawrence Cobb with a terrifying calmness that made the grown man step back. “You used some poor soul who looked vaguely like him to close the books and collect a fraudulent payout. Where is my son, Lawrence?”

Lawrence stumbled over a stone marker, nearly losing his balance as guilt radiated from his entire posture. “It was an accident on site, Mrs. Vance, I swear to you it was just a terrible construction accident,” Lawrence blurted out defensively, digging his own grave with every panicked word. “The scaffolding gave way, and everything happened so fast that we panicked about corporate bankruptcy and liability.”
