The Empty Coffin

“They planned to declare Leonard legally dead following a staged accident to cash out his substantial key-person life policy,” the young lawyer explained to the detective. “Mrs. Vance’s unexpected arrival completely disrupted their timeline before they could finalize the permanent cover-up. If she had arrived twenty minutes later, the grave would have been sealed and nobody would have ever known.”

Clara closed her eyes for a brief moment, thanking God for guiding her footsteps and making her take that early morning bus from Waco. She knew that her motherly instinct had saved Leonard from a fate worse than death at the hands of greedy associates. Now, with the authorities fully mobilized and search teams dispatched to the properties owned by the construction firm, hope burned brighter than ever.

As Verónica and Lawrence were led away in separate patrol cars, Clara walked slowly toward the cemetery gates with her head held high. She held the ringing phone in one hand and the old family photograph pressed firmly against her chest. The road ahead would be long and difficult, but Clara Vance was ready to bring her only son back home where he belonged.
