“By being present,” I replied. “Every day. Sitting there. Listening. Paying attention.”

Dad’s face darkened. “We don’t need work.”

“It’s not a job,” I said. “You won’t work. You won’t get paid. You’ll just experience being the only ‘different’ person in a room.”

Mom seemed confused. “I don’t understand.”

Jordan cleared his throat. “My company is all about integration. All employees are people with dwarfism like me, people with physical or cognitive disabilities or…”

“You can’t be serious,” Dad said abruptly, looking at me.

“You’re going to spend a week here,” I continued. “You’ll see what my husband built. You’ll meet the people who helped him build it.” And you’ll do it without making a joke.”

Mom looked terrified. “That’s ridiculous, Jennifer. We came here to help, and you’re trying to punish us.

“No,” I said quietly. “This is the first honest conversation we have had in years. If you see it as a punishment… That says more about you than it does about me.”

Then dad finally lost his temper.

“We’re not going to waste a week in a circus just to get your help. It’s absurd.”

The word was left in the air.

Circus.
