“Sit down, Nathan.”
I sat, but kept my coat on. The hospital office was quiet except for the old wall clock above her filing cabinet.
Caroline took a key from her pocket and fitted it into the cabinet lock.
“Before we look at anything else, I need you to see the visitor log.”
She pulled out a thin folder and laid it between us.
I ran my finger down the printed names. October 28. October 29. October 30.
Then I saw Hannah.
The entry was dated October 28, two days before Lorraine’s account of when Hannah passed away.
“Why is her name here?”
Caroline did not answer at once. She tapped the corner of the folder twice.
“Because this entry was restricted.”
“Restricted by whom?”
“That is what I have been trying to establish.”
She turned the log toward herself and checked the line beneath Hannah’s name.
There was a room number, a time, and one set of initials. The visitor field had been left blank.
