“Where is it?”
“I am not telling you until I know you are alone.”
“I am on the porch.”
“Is Caleb inside?”
“Yes.”
“Then do not say anything about the envelope.”
I looked through the window.
Caleb was standing in the hallway, speaking to Lorraine.
He turned his head toward the porch.
I lowered my voice.
“Caroline, what did Hannah put in that envelope?”
“I do not know everything.”
“You opened it?”
“No.”
“Then why are you afraid to tell me where it is?”
“Because Hannah told me to give it to you only after you came home.”
“I am home.”
“I know.”
Her voice changed.
“Nathan, do not let your mother put anything in your hands tonight.”
The paper in my hand had one corner bent under, and Caroline was already reaching for it when I stepped toward the door.
I stopped. She pointed to the chair beside her desk.
