The conflicting descriptions in the emergency dispatches became clearer after Santa Monica police publicly identified the death as a suspected overdose. In a statement reported by People, Santa Monica police said detectives “are investigating the death as a suspected overdose.” The department also said, “At this time, there is no indication of foul play.”
Police emphasized that the official cause and manner of death would ultimately be determined by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner, and that the investigation remained ongoing.
That distinction is important because an apparent or suspected overdose is not yet the official cause of death. The Medical Examiner has not made that determination.
An autopsy was performed Monday, September 21. However, the examination did not immediately establish the cause or manner of Presley’s death. The Medical Examiner said both had been deferred, meaning additional testing or studies were requested before a determination can be made.
