In this photo I smiled in the arms of my stepfather… For years, my mother believed that she loved me like her own daughter, but I did not know that, behind closed doors, those same hands subjected me to such cruel abuse that their consequences would accompany me throughout my life

But that day I couldn’t do it anymore.

I started crying.

Not screaming.

Just tears started to fall down my cheeks.

And I said:

“Mom, please… don’t believe her this time.

Pregnancy and Maternity

My mother stood still.

Mark started talking.

It’s just a girl. He’s overreacting.

But my mother raised a hand.

Mark, get out of the room.

“Sarah…

I said come out.

For the first time, Mark saw my mother in a way that even I hadn’t seen her before.

He tried to explain himself, justify his behavior and even say that I didn’t want him and that he was trying to separate them.

But when he finally came out, my mother knelt in front of me.

Pregnancy and Maternity

“Emily, tell me everything.

I couldn’t.

The words didn’t come out.

Then I remembered the  papers that I had hidden behind the furniture.

I went to my room and brought the whole pile.

My mother sat on the floor and started reading.

One  paper.

Then another.

And another.

I saw how his expression changed with each page.

In the end he just pressed the papers against his chest.

Textiles and nonwoven fabrics

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

And then I said a phrase that my mother would take years to forgive.

I tried, Mom.

That same night my mother took me with her and we went to my aunt’s house. Later, the adults took care of everything else.

Mark never lived with us again.
